Secondary

The standards for Middle School Science incorporate all eight science and engineering practices, which support enhanced understanding of science skills and standards during their middle school years.  Science and Engineering Practices:

  1. Asking questions (for science) and defining problems (for engineering)
  2. Developing and using models
  3. Planning and carrying out investigations
  4. Analyzing and interpreting data
  5. Using mathematics and computational thinking
  6. Constructing explanations (for science) and designing solutions (for engineering)
  7. Engaging in an argument from evidence 8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

Additionally, students refine their grasp of the four disciplinary core ideas encompassing physical sciences, life sciences, earth and space sciences, and technology/engineering.  Within this framework, each grade adopts a unique thematic lens, providing a focused perspective on scientific concepts.

Grade 6 centers around the exploration of structure and function, grade 7 delves into systems and cycles, while grade 8 investigates cause and effect. This thematic approach not only adds richness to the learning experience but also allows students to deepen their understanding within specific scientific contexts throughout their middle school education.

The High School Science practices extend the foundational experiences from prior grades.  The incorporation of science and engineering practices in high school courses offers students opportunities to hone their scientific knowledge and equip them with skills required for career and college readiness.

At LPS students are presented with the chance to explore various disciplines of science, technology, and engineering at differentiated levels.
