RETIRING LCHS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR BILLY DEVIN JR. SAYS THANK YOU!!!
I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of the people that helped me in my career as an educator and athletic director in the Lynn Public School system. I am a proud 1982 graduate of Lynn Classical High School where I had tremendous teachers and athletic coaches. My English teacher Robert Wormstead and my typing teacher Marie Grogan challenged me everyday and because of them I developed a love of reading (and writing) and the skill to type every single one of my undergraduate and graduate research papers. Frank Poska was my very patient golf coach, Tom Fabrizio my gritty hockey coach, and Dick Maag my affable baseball coach. I learned valuable life lessons from all 3 of them. Thank you.
My immediate family has been my anchor. My Dad (Bill Sr.) was a long time educator and coach at North Reading High School. He also bartended at the Arena Café (787 Western Ave) every Thursday night, officiated high school football games, and painted houses in the summer months. But I have to remind Dad that it was my Mom (Eileen) that drove me to all of my 6am hockey practices growing up. An avid reader as well she also worked at a local dentist office for over 30 years. Thank you. My wife Lynne has been an absolute rock since my early days as an English teacher at the Breed Middle School and my biggest supporter in my tenure as the athletic director at Lynn Classical High School. Always willing to help and volunteer her time she has certainly seen her share of baseball and hockey games over the years. She is also my devoted walking partner. Thank you “Lynne” from Lynn. I was blessed to watch all 4 of my boys blossom as student-athletes at LCHS. All were honor roll students and excelled on the golf course, in the hockey rink and on the baseball diamond. Kyle is now a hitting/catching instructor at the Swing Factory in Lynn, Brandon is a Lynn Police Officer, Sean earned his Master’s Degree from WSU and is an accountant at All Care in Lynn, and Matthew is a Dean’s List student and hockey player at Bridgewater State University. But the biggest superstar of the clan is Jocelyn!!! She is going to be in the fourth grade at the Lincoln Thomson Elementary School in Lynn and loves skating (roller and ice), bike riding, playing softball, swimming, and bouncing on her trampoline. Thank you.
The coaches at Lynn Classical High School are spectacular. They are selfless, driven, dedicated, and committed to our student-athletes. They have high expectations for our kids in the classroom and on the playing fields, courts, pool, and stadiums. They lead by example and are all excellent role models. This is a description not just for our head coaches at LC but all of our valued assistant coaches as well. Thank you. The present head coaches at LCHS are:

Our kids and coaches also have a first class athletic trainer. His name is Jonathan Crocker. He is one of the best in the business. I envision him someday working at the D1 college level or in the professional ranks. Thank you.
The athletic support staff at LCHS is outstanding. Honestly it is very difficult to find people who do what they do. They care a great deal about the school, the kids, and the coaches. They sacrifice a lot of nights, weekends, and vacations to help out. Thank you so much to the following people (and groups) for helping the athletic program at LCHS:

I have been fortunate to also work for 3 Principals who value the importance of educational athletics: WARREN WHITE JR., GENE CONSTANTINO, AND AMY DUNN. Thank you. And to my mentor DICK RUTH (THE LEGEND)…thank you for answering all of my questions, your patience, and doing the basketball clock for 15 years!!! You are a class act and a true professional. Thank you.
My assistant athletic director is Cathy Ellis. We both graduated from LC in 1982. She actually lives closer to LCHS than I do. Cathy has been a teacher and a former coach at the school for over 25 years. She is in the Hall of Fame as a prolific softball pitcher who later starred at Ithaca College in New York. How good of a softball pitcher was she? I found out the hard way. On a challenge one day at the Lynn Tech baseball field Cathy asked me to step into the batter’s box. She easily struck me out on 3 pitches (Curley, Larry, and Moe). Cathy is an excellent athletic administrator. She is super organized and a top notch communicator with our student-athletes and coaches. She is the best assistant AD in the state. Thank you for all you have done for the school and the athletic department. Also thank you to my 2 former assistant athletic directors Tim Phelps and Chris Warren.
Jerry Waldron, a former guidance counselor at the Breed Middle School, changed the course of my professional life forever. He encouraged me to pursue a career in education and helped me land my first job as an English teacher at Breed. Jerry, along with Doug Wilson, Tim Twomey, Jim Dakin, Bruce MacInnis, and Bob Smith became my mentors. Jerry later wrote me an impressive letter of recommendation when I applied to be the athletic director at Lynn Classical High School. His son Jeff, an LC grad and former professional baseball player, later became an excellent assistant baseball coach at our school. Thank you.
The student-athletes at Lynn Classical High School are RAM TOUGH. I love the way you compete and battle our opponents in every game. NO EXCUSES JUST RESULTS. I look forward to attending as many games as possible next year. It was a privilege and an honor to work as a Physical Education teacher and the Athletic Director at LCHS for the past 17 years.
THANK YOU BILLY DEVIN JR. AND AS ALWAYS GO RAMS!!!

A huge congratulations
to the LCHS Girl's Varsity Softball Team and head coach Joe Morin for
qualifying for the D2 MIAA State Tournament...the team defeated cross
town rival Lynn English 8-1 this past Saturday night in the first round
of the John Holland Memorial Tournament at the Breed Middle School's
Grace Rogato Field...
Senior Captain Rachel Dana fired a complete game 2
hitter on the bump for the Rams and also recorded her 100th career hit in
the victory. Sophomore Aysia Olaes smashed a 2 run double and junior
Ava Cahill blasted an rbi double as well...Sophomore first basemen
Brooke Braswell finished the game with 3 rbi's...
The Rams finished the
regular season with a 10-10 record and became the fourth LCHS spring team to qualify for postseason play in the MIAA State Tournament (Boy's Volleyball, Baseball, and Boy's Tennis)...Congratulations to all and as always GO RAMS!!!
Update: Thursday May 23, 2024
Amazing news!!! An incredible accomplishment!!! The varsity baseball team led by first year head coach Leon Elwell has qualified for
the D2 MIAA State Tournament!!! Behind the gutsy pitching performance
of junior ace Christopher "Figgy" Figueroa and the stellar glove work
of freshmen shortstop Mark "Marky" Walsh the Rams defeated GBL foe
Revere 8-1 tonight at historic Fraser Field in front of a boisterous
home crowd. The win puts the gritty Rams at 10-8 with 2 regular season
games left to play.
So how does a varsity team that graduated 12 seniors and starts 4 or 5 freshmen players
on a regular basis win the magical 10 games to qualify? It all starts
with the head coach Leon Elwell...he has the team believing and playing like they can win every single game on their schedule regardless if
they only had 3 players returning to this year's team with ANY varsity
experience...evident in a walk off win last win week against first place
Somerville with senior Yoniel Cabral ripping a single to center field
in the bottom of the 7th or even in a 2-0 loss this past Saturday to
Middlesex League powerhouse Reading Rockets... this team is playing a
solid brand of baseball (bunting, stealing bases, sliding into first
base, making plays etc) and proving all the preseason naysayers wrong...
I
have been the Athletic Director at my alma mater for the last 17 years
and I am most proud of this group of kids and their coaches (Leon
Elwell, Chris Tgettis, Jay Rogato, and Pat Whalen)...they have overcome a
tremendous amount of adversity...terrible spring weather, countless
hours of practicing in the gym, losing tough games, winning tough games,
but most importantly staying together as a TEAM and never ever giving
up...we have a sign hanging up as every athletic team heads out the back
door (D 10) to the bus that reads, "BELIEVE IT CAN BE DONE"...YOU
GUYS DID IT !!!
The future is extremely bright for our school's
baseball team...Coach Elwell does not believe in bridge years or when I
use the word "overachieving"...he sees a group of young kids that love
the game of baseball and want to get better every day...come see for
yourself!...the Rams are playing rival Lynn English this Friday night at
Fraser Field at 7pm in the Doug Mullins Memorial Tournament...Congratulations
Coach Elwell and the Varsity Baseball Team you are going dancing in the
D2 MIAA State Tournament!!! Proud AD Billy Devin Class of 82 ***the
baseball team is joining our boy's volleyball team and the boy's tennis
team in the State Tournament...our girl's softball team also has a solid
chance of qualifying for the tournament!!!
AS ALWAYS GO RAMS!!!
